Dialogue between two friends about the poverty in Bangladesh
F1: Hi friend,
have you ever wondered about the low-economic rate of our country and its
poverty rate?
F2: Yes,
though, if we see the present condition of Bangladesh, it’s developing rapidly,
somehow, it cannot demolish its huge poverty rate completely. I think
two-hundred-year colonial rule and twenty-four-year Pakistani rule are mainly
responsible for the present poor condition of our country.
F1: Right you are and I also want to add that the
natural calamities like river erosion, cyclone, tidal surge, excessive rain;
underdeveloped communications system; Lack of education and skilled labor; and
lack of administrative fairness and accountability are also responsible for
poverty persistence. I observed that the rich
society are becoming richer and the poor ones are being crushed beneath the
severe poverty. Moreover, meeting a three-course meal is a nightmare for the poor
class. Can’t our upper-class society or the govt do something for annihilating
this devastating situation?
F2: My
question is also slightly like that. But in proportion to our population-growth
rate, the employment posts are hardly expanding. Ours is a small country with a
large, illiterate population. So, how far the govt or upper-classes want to
develop, the situation will scarcely change overnight. However, the good news is
that the extreme poverty level has come down to 11.3% in
2018 which had been 25.1% in 2005.
F1: So, we better hope that Bangladesh would be able to
attain the related SDG target by 2030 by eradicating poverty.
F2: Thanks a lot friend for raising such a productive issue.
F1: It’s my
pleasure.
